Safe Sleeping with the HALO SleepSack

Worrying as your baby sleeps does not stop with your first baby, as I quickly learned when we first brought home our newest addition earlier this year. If anything, I was more nervous this second time around, since we already safely made it through the newborn-baby-toddler phases with our first. Now, we had to do it all over again.

When P was making her debut, the umbilical cord was wrapped tightly around her neck and was having trouble breathing. At the time, no one was telling me what was happening, but I knew something was not right. The nurse would not fully put P on my chest and I was not getting a chance to hold her. After the nurse was able to get P breathing and her body coloring turned a nice pink shade, I was then informed what had happened. Because of this, I feel like I automatically felt more protective of her and more nervous when I put her down. I know that this was not going to cause permanent damage, but it put me on edge for awhile and kept me up many nights. I was constantly checking on her and on her breathing. 'Is she okay?' 'Is she breathing?' 'Justin, come check her, please?' Many nights, I slept with my hand on her chest while she slept in her Bassinest. But, the one thing that really helped me get through those nights was the HALO SleepSack

The HALO SleepSack helped keep my mind at ease and helped keep P safe and, oh, so warm! She is a cold little thing, so the fleece HALO SleepSack kept her nice and toasty, but never put her in harms way. We are still using the HALO SleepSack as we transition P from the Bassinest to her crib and own room, which helps me worry less while she is in there all by herself all.night. long.

Favorite SleepSack Features

• The SleepSack is sleeveless to help reduce the risk of overheating.
• The roomy sack design promotes healthy hip development and is recognized as 'hip healthy' by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute.
•  HALO's message of 'Back is Best' is enscribed on all SleepSacks to remind all caregivers to put baby to sleep on their back.
• The SleepSack has an inverted zipper for easy diaper changes - no need to unswaddle and disturb your baby.
• The SleepSack is available in three cozy fabric options: Cotton [perfect for warmer months], Fleece [perfect for those wintery nights] or Muslin [perfect for anytime]!

Safe Sleep Tips by HALO

ALWAYS
• Place baby to sleep on his or her back at naptime and at night time.
• Use a crib that meets current safety standards with a firm mattress that fits snugly and is covered
with only a tight-fitting crib sheet.
• Remove all blankets, comforters and toys from your baby’s sleep area (this includes loose blankets,
bumpers, pillows and positioners). The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests using a wearable
blanket instead of loose blankets to keep your baby warm.
• Offer a pacifier when putting baby to sleep. If breastfeeding, introduce pacifier after one month or
after breastfeeding has been established.
• Breastfeed, if possible, but when finished, put your baby back to sleep in his or her separate safe
sleep area alongside your bed.
• Room share, but don’t bed share. Bed sharing can put a child at risk of suffocation.

NEVER
• Never put your baby to sleep on any soft surface (adult beds, sofas, chairs, water beds, quilts,
sheep skins etc.)
• Never dress your baby too warmly for sleep; keep room temperature 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit.
• Never allow anyone to smoke around your baby or take your baby into a room or car where some-
one has recently smoked.
